I was mid-Tuesday takeover when the love doctor dropped it in chat. I did not see this coming. TMZ reported Tuesday that Dolly Parton has died at 80, and her nephew and longtime head of security, Brian Siver — Cassie Parton’s son — posted the Instagram video Dolly asked him to record years ago. There had been health talk, canceled dates, then a message that she was on the mend. Look, that’s the family speaking. Not a comment-section cause of death. Here’s what they actually said.

The Video Dolly Asked For Years Ago

According to TMZ, the country icon behind some of the biggest songs ever recorded has died, and her head of security announced it Tuesday on Instagram. Brian identified himself as representing the Parton and Owens family, announcing the passing of his aunt Dolly Rebecca Parton — sister, Aunt Granny to one generation, Gigi to the next. He said the video was something she asked of him years ago, before he fully absorbed it as a future reality. He has been her head of security for more than two decades, a role his father Larry held before him. The honor, he said, is mixed with pride and great sadness, but the sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. She’s lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl Dean, her parents, and the people who were waiting. He first went on the road with her as a kid in the early 1980s. She opened doors for the family and for singers and dreamers on every continent. Just saying: we don’t have a medical examiner line in this report. We have the family asking you to hear it from them.

“Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.”

She Farmed Songs — Tennessee Is Going to Feel That Hole

TMZ’s write-up, as I read it live, is the six-decade version: Jolene, 9 to 5, I Will Always Love You — the one she wrote and recorded before Whitney Houston took it somewhere else, and the one Beyoncé sampled on Cowboy Carter. She became one of the most beloved figures in entertainment while building an empire past the songs. Literacy. Charity. Children being able to read. Dollywood. I got there a few years ago and called it a happy place. I already knew she was a smart businesswoman. The nephew said the family and the team she entrusted with her legacy will work diligently so her spirit lives here. Tennessee is going to celebrate her because she gave that state and this country more than rhinestones. People are going to hear about things they didn’t even know she funded. The music was always going to outlive the news cycle. That’s the catalog. That’s not breaking. That’s Dolly.

Elvis Wanted the Song — Colonel Parker Wanted Half

Here’s the thing. A few weeks ago I was watching Dolly tell the I Will Always Love You story again. Elvis loved the song. They were in town, ready to record, friends invited to the session. Colonel Tom Parker called the day before: you do know Elvis doesn’t record anything he doesn’t publish, or at least get half the publishing on. She said she couldn’t do that. The song was already a hit for her, it lived in her publishing company, and it was copyright she was leaving for her family. Parker said then they can’t record it. She was heartbroken and still said no. She was young. That took guts. Thank God. Can you imagine if she had given it away? That’s the Dolly in the video — farmer like her daddy, except he farmed the soil and she farmed songs and happiness. Say what you want about the rhinestone armor. She protected the catalog when it would have been easier to say yes.

Don’t Invent What TMZ Didn’t Give Us

Y’all, this is very sad news and a life well lived in the same breath. I said I should have had the Dolly shirt on. I’m putting it on after the live. I keep looking for new ones from Tennessee and Walmart because so many of you end up loving those shirts. Please give this family grace while they do the work of a goodbye she already wrote. How do you speak about someone who can’t defend themselves? You start with the video they asked for. Death is a reminder to the living to live more fully — whatever that means for you. We shall see the tributes, the Tennessee services, the books, the park. How do you guys feel about that — can we sit with the nephew’s video without inventing a medical story the family didn’t put in it? Drop a prayer for the Parton and Owens family. Rest in peace, Dolly. Empire After Dark hits The Green Room 42 on September 25. Here we go.
