Tamar Braxton has addressed that viral Essence Fest stage moment with Kandi Burruss and Monica in a new interview — and her official line is she doesn’t care. She says she walked up, said congratulations, and kept it moving at a professional celebratory event where Monica and Brandy were being honored. Look, I’ve already done whole videos on Kandi’s “giving side eye while keeping it classy” post and Tamar’s deleted clapback. Here’s what she said this time, the subtle dig at whoever put the clip online, and why the victim energy still isn’t landing for me.
She Said Congrats, Kept It Moving — Then Told On the “Peace” Branding
In the interview, Tamar is asked point-blank whether she regrets speaking to Kandi after people called the exchange mean-girl energy. Her answer: she does not regret saying congratulations. She was at Essence Fest, people on stage were being honored, and she claims she showed gratitude and went about her business — not “let’s go to lunch,” not wound-mending, just a professional hello. She also leaned hard into the peaceful-life branding: she doesn’t want beef, she enjoys her peace, she has great friends who really love her for real. Y’all… we’ve heard this song. Here’s the thing — Tamar can say she wants peace all day, but she’s so not peaceful when the cameras and comments start rolling. Just saying. The Essence Fest clip already had context before this interview: Monica wouldn’t even make eye contact or drop Missy Elliott’s hand, Missy’s face said she knew exactly what was happening, and Tyrese was in the frame while Tamar slid back into the group photo.
“I don’t care. I said congratulations, and I went on about my business.”
God Bless Them — But She Knows Exactly Who She Meant
Then came the line that made me hit pause. When the interviewer said the moment got blown out of proportion online, Tamar answered that whoever brought it to the internet wanted that kind of reaction — and God bless them. Oh, that’s her taking a shot. She never said Kandi’s name, which is very on-brand, but she knows the internet read Kandi’s Instagram caption — “giving side eye while keeping it classy” — as the clapback. Rewind the tape though: as soon as the stage moment hit, accounts like Fresh I Made It (or whoever posted first) had everyone talking about Monica’s freeze-out and Kandi’s face. Kandi posted later. Monica still hasn’t said a word online. So if Tamar’s dig was meant for Kandi, that’s convenient storytelling. She’ll swear she never named anybody. She’ll also swear she’s the innocent one in a beef she reopened on NeNe Leakes’ YouTube show a few months ago telling Kandi to be a better person and stop doing things “behind the scenes.”
Victim Mode Activated — Psychology Degree or Not, We’ve Seen This Movie
I have to stop there because this is the Tamar pattern, and we’ve covered enough of her beefs — Kandi, Funky Dineva, the list goes on — that the victim frame is impossible to miss. Same energy people clock with K. Michelle on Real Housewives of Atlanta: make yourself the injured party even when you walked into the moment. Tamar told Wendy Williams years ago she unfollowed a bunch of folks after The Real, planned to follow Monica back, and found herself blocked — which told me Monica had been itching to do that for a long time. I’m just saying. I honestly wish Kandi hadn’t posted anything and hadn’t given the eye roll… but sometimes us Tauruses can’t help our facial expressions, and after NeNe’s couch session I understand why Kandi kept that energy. There have been moments where Tamar took the higher ground and I fell for it — only for her to take the lower ground later. I already know it’s a matter of time before she takes the low ground again. Like girl, you are not innocent in this particular situation.
Farm Life Can Wait When the Movie of the Summer Needs a Press Cycle
Tamar, I thought you were going to go to your farm and stay there. I forgot you have the number one movie of the summer. The deleted shady carousel, the pinned comments, the NeNe shots, and now this “I don’t care / God bless them” interview are not the moves of somebody who left the arena — they’re the moves of somebody still managing the narrative while pretending the spotlight found her by accident. Monica’s silence is still louder than any caption. Kandi’s classy-petty post still reads cleaner than a nameless internet dig aimed at whoever posted first. I’m keeping an open mind about what exactly was said on that stage — we don’t have audio of the congratulations — but the public pattern after the fact is doing a lot of talking. Did you have the same reaction I had, or do you think Tamar actually kept it classy this round? And does Monica owe anybody an explanation, or is the block still the whole thesis? Drop it in the comments. Kempire After Dark hits The Green Room 42 on September 25. Here we go.
