Variety reports Peacock has greenlit a three-part documentary on Wendy Williams — working title Clap If You Care: The Wendy Williams Show — aimed at 2027. Wendy is not involved. Her former executive producer Suzanne Bass is. Paparazzi caught Wendy last week walking in New York and she gave them one sentence: I want out. My read is the same as Britney’s conservatorship math: the only way this guardianship moves is if we keep talking. Word on the street is a Netflix doc is coming too. Unconfirmed. Variety is the one with the press release.

Suzanne Gets the Hour — Wendy Gets Another Camera That Isn’t Hers

Look, Variety’s line is that Peacock is digging into the whirlwind world of the former radio host and daytime star. Clap if you care is something Wendy actually said, so the title slaps even as a working title. Calm down on 2027 — I clocked it as about four months out, same neighborhood as Christmas. Williams is not involved. Bass, who ran the syndicated strip for 13 seasons — the Suzanne Wendy would turn to on air — executive produces, with Ever Wonder Studio also on the project, per Variety. The show launched in 2008 and ended in June 2022. Almost five years. She took a leave starting in 2021 tied to lymphedema and Graves’ disease, entered a court-appointed guardianship in 2022, and in 2024 her team disclosed aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. Just saying: the press release is celebrating the talk show. The paparazzi clip is still one sentence. That’s the announcement.

“I want out.”

Keep Talking Like Britney

Here’s the thing. I’m not a doctor — I’ll have Dr. Freda back — but based on what I’ve read about this diagnosis, and based on how Bruce Willis has been pulled from public view because the same family of conditions is progressive, I haven’t seen that progression in Wendy. Do I notice a difference? Yes. That could be medication at the adult living facility. That could be a lot of things. It’s definitely not giving the public version of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia as a closed book. Variety notes she’s been vocal about objecting to the guardianship. Last year she called The View and told guardian Sabrina Morsy and the judge who declared her incapacitated to get off her neck: I need a new guardian. She told The Breakfast Club she feels like she’s in a prison and she’s not cognitively impaired. I’m keeping an open mind because we are not her neurologist. We can still hear I want out.

This One Wants the Talk Show — the Other Ones Wanted the Decline

Past documentaries leaned on the health crisis and the guardianship. Lifetime’s Where Is Wendy Williams? had her as an EP and chronicled footage from August 2022 to April 2023. It followed 2021’s Wendy Williams: What a Mess, the divorce-and-mishap hour. Clap If You Care, per Peacock, celebrates the outrageous fun, cultural impact, and meteoric rise of the show — from unlikely radio beginnings to redefining daytime, with the complicated cost of fame and lingering questions about the infamous exit from her own show. Over 20 former staffers will share behind-the-scenes memories. I’m actually excited about a version that remembers why people loved the show, and Bass was there from supervising producer on up. Look, it’s still wild that Wendy is going to have this many documentaries about her life already. The conversation is the point. Where is her money? Where is she? Why is she still under this guardianship?

The Lawyer Said End of Last Year

I reported to you guys at the end of last year that a lawyer hired separate from the guardianship said she’d be out by the end of the year. Here we are about to be a year later. She’s still in it. She told paparazzi last week, walking with an older man I guessed was a caretaker from the facility, that she wants out. We shall see if Peacock’s love letter to the syndicated years does what Lifetime’s decline tapes didn’t. Two things can be true: a staffer doc can honor the show and still be another product that doesn’t need Wendy’s consent. Free Wendy still stays the caption on this one. How do you guys feel about that — do we clap because the title is hers, or do we clock that 2027 is a calendar and the guardianship is not? Drop it below. Keep talking. Empire After Dark hits The Green Room 42 on September 25. Here we go.
