According to Variety, Selma Blair has been charged with second-degree assault after a violent incident on a Delta flight from Los Angeles to JFK, and NBC 4 New York has footage from her court appearance in Queens. Then there’s Kelly Clarkson, who went on X to blast Art of Play, a curiosity shop in Brooklyn, and the shop answered with not one but two statements. We also got into Karen Huger, Tia Glover and Melania Giudice, but these are the two y’all came for. Let’s get into it.
Y’all Are Not Going to Have Me Acting Up at the Airport
Here’s the thing: when you act up on a plane, it becomes federal. Variety reports that on Sunday’s flight, Blair allegedly punched one flight attendant, bit another and tried to open the plane door while they were in the air. Two flight attendants reported injuries, and one was treated at a hospital. Police were waiting at JFK and took her to a hospital for evaluation, where prosecutors say she repeatedly kicked a Port Authority officer and then kicked a nurse in the chest. NBC 4 says the officer had swelling to the face and substantial pain in the arm. On Monday evening she pleaded not guilty to the state charges in Queens criminal court and posted $20,000 bail, paid by credit card. The federal charges over what happened on the plane are separate. Her representative told Variety she had a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct, and her defense pointed to her multiple sclerosis. Her next court date is in January. My first thought was to check on my sister, and thankfully she doesn’t work that route.
“I try to give grace to people acting up at the airport, but this? No.”
I Try to Give Grace at the Airport — Not This Time
Blair has been open about living with MS, so when I first heard “medical emergency,” I wondered if something had gone wrong with her health. Then I heard the details. This isn’t the first time, either. In 2016, she was carried off a flight on a stretcher while traveling with her four-year-old son, after what she called a “total psychotic blackout,” and she blamed a glass of wine and a pill. Somebody in my chat who says she’s a lawyer said the warning label and voluntary drinking would sink a medical defense. Hold on, though. We know she drank on that 2016 flight. We do not know whether she was drinking on this one, and I’m not a doctor, so we don’t know what medications she’s on either. That’s a question for Dr. Freda. Everybody wants her on the no-fly list, but there will be a full investigation first. I’m not saying she needs to go to jail, but something has to happen. If you’re flying, your one responsibility is to take your medication, for you and for everybody around you. And I keep thinking about those flight attendants. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sue.
Wait, Kelly, Did You Go Up in There Like a Karen?
Kelly said she drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out Art of Play with a few things in mind to buy, got looked at like she couldn’t afford it, and was told they could find her something comparable. Her advice: if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, go check them out. Art of Play responded that she had asked about Molly, a one-of-a-kind singing and dancing bird automaton that is permanently attached to the wall and not for sale, and that their small business was suddenly attacked by people who had never visited. So I’m thinking, did Kelly try to buy something that wasn’t for sale? Then Kelly clapped back. She says she pointed at the price tag on the wall, and the guy looked her up and down and said yes, it’s for sale, but it costs $15,000. She posted a photo of the bird, and if you zoom in by the little leaf shadow, there’s the price tag. Art of Play wasn’t done. Their second statement says she was in the store for five minutes, that Molly’s nearly identical twin belongs to the artist who built it and he’d part with it for $15,000, and that they offered to show her a roughly $2,000 bird from a German clockmaker, which she didn’t stick around to see.
None of Us Were There, So Be Team You
Is it me, or does that second statement sound a little condescending? I’ll say this: it lines up with something I’ve noticed in parts of Brooklyn. Neighborhoods that used to be Puerto Rican or Black have been gentrified, and in some of these shops there’s an entitlement, like you can be rude and snobbish because you’ve been there a hot second. And if you’ve ever seen Kelly out in public, she isn’t dressed like Kelly on The Voice. Still, I’m not defending the shop and I’m not defending Kelly. Some of y’all say that even if they were rude, someone with her following shouldn’t be blasting a small business. I’m twerking on the fence, because she has a right to talk about her experience. A YouTube channel claims to have the security footage, and if it shows Kelly being a Karen, are y’all still team Kelly? Be team you. And please stop posting fake reviews. If you weren’t there, you don’t get to write one. If you want to boycott, just don’t go. Would you pay $15,000 for a singing bird, and was Kelly wrong to blast the shop? Let me know. Here we go.
