Friday night was the dating live, which is really a relationship live, because toxic love shows up in marriages, friendships and families too. Before I opened the phones, I ran through the stories that set up the theme. Tia Glover told Entertainment Tonight that the dating app story about her husband is true. Sai De Silva told us on The Real Housewives of New York City that her marriage was never what it looked like. Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker are getting contentious online. Chris Rock explained on The Breakfast Club why he hasn’t worked with his brother. Then y’all called in for three hours. We listen and we don’t judge. Here we go.
A Dating App Is Premeditation
Tia confirmed in that Entertainment Tonight interview that her husband was bored and got on a dating app, that it’s new, and that they’re still working through it. She said she’s open to more coming out. Hear me out. I think getting on an app is worse than getting drunk and hooking up with somebody. Both are wrong. But you’re at home, the kids are in the next room, and you’re selecting photos and filling out prompts. Here’s what I can’t get past, though. She told ET that Gizelle knew around the reunion, sat in her hotel room and said nothing, and then she says Stacey worked hard to plant it on Gizelle. Tia, be mad at your husband first. Then be mad at the people who took it to a Reality Rundown event before it ever came to you. Would I tell a friend? If we’re really close and I have solid evidence, yes, and you can be mad at me. An acquaintance, I’m staying out of grown people’s business. I just don’t give Gizelle that grace. She said the friendship was rocked and that they’re good now. Is a dating app a deal breaker for you?
“I definitely did not think that my friend had this information and she didn’t just pick up the phone and call me.”
Staying for the Kids Is Not the Favor You Think It Is
Sai revealed this season that she’d been unhappy for a very long time while the whole world thought everything was hunky-dory, on the show and on social media, where a lot of you knew her from Scout the City. I learned this years ago from experts on The Oprah Winfrey Show: you hurt children more by staying in a marriage that isn’t working than by leaving it. Try everything first. But kids are intuitive until the world beats it out of them, and they know when you’re unhappy. Haley said something similar this season about choosing safe over happy. Then there’s the money. Sai says she was carrying the household, and David is the one who filed. I’m okay with a stay-at-home dad, because that’s a job. It comes down to the conversation a couple has about finances, and it doesn’t seem like they had that one. We’re only getting a snapshot, so a real interview with Sai would give us context. Until then, stop comparing your relationship to what people post, because what you see on social media is not even half the story.
Fifteen Years and Two Kids Is Not a Failure
Kandi did her tour and, from what I was told, collected everybody’s phones at the door. Her version is that Todd cheated, but she filed because he wouldn’t fight for the marriage. Todd’s version, in whatever that divorce project is, is that he went to a baseball game with a woman, went home with her, fell asleep and nothing happened. Sir. People keep saying the threesomes were the downfall. Maybe eventually. But they were together 15 years, have two children and built businesses together, and that doesn’t get erased. I’m going to twerk on the fence, because not everything should be up for monetization when you still have two young kids to co-parent, and that goes for both of them. When we rewatched Season 6, I told you I wouldn’t have married Kandi after how she handled Mama Joyce, and Todd sounds like he carried that resentment the whole way. Now Kandi is posting captions about where somebody had her messed up. And Porsha, talking to Monét X Change, sounds completely done with Shamea. I believe Shamea would take that friendship back tomorrow, and that’s what makes it toxic.
When Your Own People Leave You Out
This week we learned the 2006 will in Gizelle’s family left her nothing, and I do feel for her, because that’s on her father. He didn’t have to leave his children anything. Nobody is entitled to your money, and when I update my own will I might leave it all to charity. But a civil rights leader leaving nearly everything to his white wife and her sister is going to get talked about. Candiace’s response, that her mother likes her, was a read. Then Chris Rock told The Breakfast Club that Tony does great, that some of it is just being around, and that Damon Wayans isn’t in Scary Movie. Don’t use the Wayans family, they’ve been putting each other on for years. I thought it was a cop-out, though in all fairness Chris has put on a lot of Black women in comedy. And Chrisean Rock and Blueface are back together. She says he comes first because he’s her husband. My only concern there is that child. Shout out to everybody who called in and was vulnerable. Has a will or a friendship ever blindsided you? Let me know. Here we go.
